Music Theory

MVMI offers individual or group music theory or group music appreciation. Dennis Farmer has taught Music Theory and Advanced Placement Music Theory courses for over two decades as well as teaching how music works to young ones age 5-15 in many different settings.  Theory lessons can help unlock the hows and whys of what makes music both beautiful and intriguing! We currently offer three different level on-line classes so kids can learn how music works. Each course will be offered during the day once a week as an interactive class over Zoom for just $40/month per family’s* computer connection.

The classes start with our class for very young ones who have some reading ability but needing no music reading  background... and work up to our class for high school level musicians who want to really dig into how music works. A Child's Guide to Music

... and How It Works. (1st Year & 2nd Year) is an introduction to how music works for very young ones (5-9 more or less) No experience reading music or playing an instrument is necessary but they should have some basic reading ability and know their numbers and letters. We will introduce music reading in a very basic, playful way. We'll also introduce the elements of music; melody, harmony, rhythm, form, etc. all in a fun yet informative way. Live on Zoom.

Beginning Music Theory

... is an introduction to how music works for students in upper elementary to middle school. No experience reading music or playing an instrument is necessary but a desire to learn about music is! We will introduce music reading (or give help to new players struggling with reading). We'll also introduce the elements of music; melody, harmony, rhythm, form, etc. all in a fun yet informative way. We will also introduce Ear Training. Live on Zoom

Practical Music Theory

... For The Young Musician - Parts 1 & 2

... gives an introduction to Music Theory for students who have some experience reading music and playing an instrument or singing. We will delve into Harmony (scales, chords, voice-leading and progression), Melody, Rhythm and Meter, Musical Form, Musical Style, Composition, Musicianship as well as Ear Training. Live on Zoom.
